As a way of building positive relationships at school, we have looked at ways of minimizing conflict. This can be done by learning problem solving skills, learning to deal with difficult people and developing effective communication skills. Being prepared when going into a case conference can make all the difference in getting what is appropriate for your child. Here are some other thoughts on effective communication:
1. Be honest about your feelings and be sensitive to others' feelings; 2. Be open-minded and receptive to information; 3. Allow a flow of communication; 4. Listen and digest what is said and then explain your viewpoint; 5. If there is a serious problem, ask for specifics in writing; 6. Ask for a copy of school policies and procedures; 7. Ask questions about your child. I will have more suggestions in my next posting. Adapted from the In*Source Parent Packet.
